What kind of winter will we have? The woolly bear What kind of winter will we have? The woolly bear caterpillar tells a story. I found one yesterday that was fully brown! This caterpillar is from yesterday-the most brown one I’ve ever seen— she doesn’t even match my chart that I created many years ago! I suppose it’s going to be an extremely mild winter. #winter #woolybear #woolycaterpillar #weatherprognosticator #weather #geeseapprove

Yesterday, the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism pa Yesterday, the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism partnered with Friends of Whites Woods to do a Japanese Barberry pull (morning) to help the Whites Woods ecosystem in Indiana,PA. Japanese barberry is on the Pennsylvania invasive species list and is a very opportunistic plant that can cause problems in our ecosystem. This plant also creates a lot of habitat for mice, and mice or a vector for ticks—so it is good to pull when possible.

In the afternoon, I headed over to the Picadilly herb festival and partnered with the Indiana PA her study group to offer a free medicine making class with all that barberry root!

Japanese barberry has many medicinal actions, including: Astringent, Anti-microbial: Barberry is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic; antioxidant, detoxifying, immunostimulant, and even anti-cancer!

Japanese barberry contains Berberine and is a fantastic substitute for more at risk species like Goldenseal or Oregon Grape Root— this is for the primary action which is antimicrobial. Japanese barberry is also a great bitter and can be used to support the GI and liver. The one thing that the barber does not do that Goldenseal does is restore the mucus membranes, but you can use common plantain for that!

I use this a lot to fight infections, especially things like UTIs, stomach ulcers, and Lyme. This plant can also be used to help someone detoxify from drugs… It’s not the only thing I would use, but it’s a good plant for a blend.

Maybe you can find some in your woods, pull it out, and make medicine— all of those beautiful roots can also be made into an orange or yellow dye! #barberry #invasiveplantremoval #invasives #japanesebarberry #berberine #herbalism #dirtherbalism #savetheforest #makemedicine #happyherbalist
Some photos from this week’s foraging and wild ten Some photos from this week’s foraging and wild tending class. We supported the forest by harvesting a large patch of Japanese Knotweed and turned the roots into potent medicine! Japanese knotweed has a wide range of medicinal uses including being an awesome treatment for Lyme, has alterative action, cardio protective, fights cancer and functions as a brain and nerve trophorestorative! Among other things. Rather than demonize this plant, we need to abundantly harvest for food and medicine! #knotweed #japaneseknotweed #invasive #invasiveplants #invasiveplantmedicine #opportunistic #herbalism #paherbschool
