SUMMARY:Late Fall Herbal Foraging\, Wildcrafting\, and Medicine Making Intensive at McCormick Farm (Portage\, PA)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism for a late fall wild medicine foraging and medicine-making intensive.  In this intensive\, we will explore the medicines of late falls: fruits\, roots\, barks\, and seeds\, including hawthorn\, rose hip\, sassafras\, goldenrod\, turkey tail mushrooms\, and whatever else is in season. The first part of our intensive will include exploring and harvesting medicines in a variety of ecosystems: field\, edge spaces\, and forests.  On our foraging walk\, we will focus on plant\, tree\, and mushroom identification\, foraging safety and harvest ethics\, and consider the role of stewardship in foraging practice.  In the second part of our intensive\, we will process and make medicine from our harvests\, which–depending on what we find– will include tinctures\, infused vinegars\, and teas. This will be a hands-on experience. \nPreparation: Good footwear is essential for this class; please wear a closed-toe hiking shoe with good tread\, long pants\, and layers for a variety of weather conditions. Foraging often includes rough terrain and off-trail walking\, and McCormick Farm has a hilly landscape where we will be off-trail. Bring bug spray and tick repellent.  Participants will find it helpful to bring a notebook to document and take notes.  An open-weave basket\, gloves\, a knife\, and a pair of pruners are also recommended. \nCost: Sliding scale $40-$80.  Sliding scale means that you pay what you can afford to pay\, so please pay what you can afford. \nLocation: McCormick Farm\, 293 McCormick Rd\, Portage\, PA 15946\n \nCredits: This program also qualifies for 3 hours of stewardship and identification credits and 1 hour of medicine making with the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism (applicable toward the 50-hour and 100-hour certificate programs). \n  \nAbout McCormick Family Farms: A fifth-generation family farm near Portage\, PA\, offering 100% grass-fed and finished beef\, pasture-raised chicken and pork\, maple syrup\, honey\, herbal products and more. Their animals roam freely and are moved daily to fresh pasture\, promoting their health and well-being while supporting regenerative farming practices that improve soil health\, water retention\, and air quality. \nThey exceed the organic standards of today with their farming principlesand practices.  They do not use any synthetic fertilizers\, herbicides or pesticides. Instead\, they follow regenerative farming practices\, which focus on soil health\, retention of water\, and clean air. \nIn addition to providing quality products for their community\, they empower others to choose healthy alternatives and to create an independent food system to nourish families for generations to come.  Visit their website here! \nFarm products:  In addition to our walk\, McCormick Farms has a farm store where they sell a range of farm-produced and local farm products including maple syrup\, cheese\, meat\, honey\, herbal products\, and more. \nPlease note this class is subject to our cancellation policy: We offer a refund if you cancel 72 hour prior to class. Between 72 hours and 24 hours you can receive credit to take another class. No refunds or credits given for no-shows and cancellations within 24 hours except in case of emergency or illness.

SUMMARY:Herbal Support for Cleansing and Detoxification: An Energetics and Body Systems Approach with Dana Indiana\, PA
DESCRIPTION:The body is continually engaged in the work of cleansing and renewal. Rather than focusing on trendy “detoxes” or quick fixes\, this class explores how herbalists traditionally support the body’s natural elimination pathways through a holistic understanding of energetics and body systems. We’ll examine the roles of the liver\, kidneys\, lymphatic system\, skin\, lungs\, and digestive tract\, learning how herbs can encourage healthy elimination while maintaining strength and vitality. We’ll also discuss modern environmental challenges—including heavy metals and other common toxic exposures—and explore herbs that have traditionally been used to support the body’s resilience. Throughout the class\, we’ll emphasize individualized herbal approaches based on constitution\, tissue state\, and energetics.  All participants will leave with a tea to support their specific needs.  \nCredits earned: Energetics and body systems\, 1 hour; Materia medica and herbal actions\, 1 hour \n
