SUMMARY:Free Community Class: Frontier Herbalism: Traditional Herbalism Practices in Western Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:Join Dana Driscoll from the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism to learn about how people in previous centuries used plants for medicinal purposes in our ecosystem.  We will cover a number of plants growing in our ecosystem that have been used as traditional medicine\, including sassafras\, black birch\, willow\, plantain\, comfre\,y and hawthorn.  We will also have a chance to meet these plants and trees and learn about their identification\, core medicinal uses\, and make medicine from some of them.  Participants will have a chance to make several traditional plant preparations\, including poultices\, tinctures\, and salves.  An optional donation for $5 for supplies. \nThis event is being offered free to the community and in conjunction with the Indiana County 1776 speaker series and the Indiana County Friends of the Parks. \nLocation: Yellow Creek State Park (Indiana County)\, Woodland Pavilion \nTime: 5-7pm \nThis class offers 1 credit of medicine making as part of the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism’s Certificate Program.  \nNo pre-registration is required–just show up if you want to attend!

SUMMARY:Aromatics Herbalism Weekend: Crafting Hydrosols\, Essential Oils\, Herbal Incenses\, Smokes and More
DESCRIPTION:This event is FULL with the exception of a few Friday night spots and space available in the Sunday session for students with prior herbal experience! \n Join us for a weekend of unique herbal offerings on aromatic herbalism at the beautiful Rhoneymeade Arboretum.  Our weekend will center around aromatic herbalism–the unique oils and scents in plants\, and ways to unlock their medicinal value.  This will include an overview of aromatics and aromatic medicine making using local and wildcrafted ingredients.  This will include how to make several unique aromatic medicines\, including essential oils and hydrosols\, herbal incenses\, herbal smoking blends\, and more. We will also offer two opportunities for plant-based ceremonies with aromatic herbs.  On Friday evening\, you will have an opportunity to deep dive into one of two tracks: learning about the breath/diaphragm and how breath is a center point of healing with aromatic medicine (with Briel) or for those more spiritually inclined\, experiencing an introduction to plant spirit communication and a plant initiation ceremony (with Dana).  Advanced herbal students can also stay for our advanced herbal intensive on Sunday (for students who have completed at least 25 hours of herbal instruction with us).   \nWe note that this weekend is a very unique offering:  the medicine making and other practices this weekend require space\, time\, and being outdoors–so these are not subjects we teach in our typical 2-hour classes or in our foundations series.   See our descriptions of the different classes below for more information.  \nRegistration includes Cacao\, Lunch and Dinner on Saturday as well as make and take for our herbal preparations–you will go home with hydrosol\, a handcrafted incense and/or smoke blend. Registration options are: Friday & Saturday\, Friday-Sunday*.  Again: *Sunday is for our certificate students or students with prior herbal experience\, you can sign up for Sunday only if you would like by going to the class calendar and looking for 4 hour herbal immersion! \nCamping and Lodging: You are welcome to camp at Rhoneymeade for $20/night (paid directly to Rhoneymeade). With Dana O’Driscoll. The plants are humanity’s oldest herbal teachers\, and as you deepen your work with medicinal healing plants\, trees\, and mushrooms\, you may seek to develop or deepen a spiritual relationship with them.  In this session\, we will do a deep dive into the spiritual side of plants–how we can work with them as teachers and guides\, how we can communicate with them\, and understand them from an animistic perspective. Dana will share a number of techniques to begin and strengthen your skills in plant spirit communication.  In the second half of the session\, Dana will lead a plant spirit initiation ceremony where you will have a chance to meet and learn from a plant ally\, receive their blessing\, and deepen your work in this direction.   \nSaturday: Cacao Ceremony:  Cacao (Theobroma Cacao) is an incredible healing plant with a wide range of medicinal benefits\, although most people experience cacao through highly processed chocolate products. Instead\, we are going back to the way this highly medicinal and sacred drink has been prepared for millennia in South America and learn about the medicine of this plant.  Join Dana and Briel for a cacao ceremony where we offer teachings about cacao\, how to make cacao\, and then drink our cacao in gratitude with each other.  \nSaturday Morning: Introduction to Aromatics and Essential Oil/Hydrosols: This workshop will provide insight into Aromatics as one of the six foundational actions in herbalism: what aromatics are\, how they function for healing\, common aromatics we can grow or wild harvest in our region\, and how to make medicine.  We will demonstrate two methods for making essential oils and hydrosols: a pot method that anyone can do at home and the traditional method using an alembic (a copper still).  After these workshops\, we will be running the alembic throughout the day with several different plant and tree preparations (depending on the abundance\, but likely mint\, white pine and possibly one other). Everyone will get some hydrosol home with them. \nSaturday: Introduction to Aromatic Herbal Smoke Blends\, Smoke Sticks\, and Herbal Incense Crafting & Open Herbal Crafting time:  Burning herbs for medicinal purposes is a rich and ancient tradition that has been done globally across many cultures.  In this class\, we will demonstrate three different approaches to aromatic smokes with medicinal benefits.  This workshop will begin with a discussion of the medicinal and spiritual uses of herbal smokes and their history of use.  Then we will cover how to make three different kind of herbal smokes \n\nSustainable herbal incense crafting.  Incense crafting in the ancient art of burning botanicals for medicinal or spiritual purposes.  However\, today many of the ingredients traditionally used in incenses\, including aromatic woods and resins\, are critically endangered.  We will teach you to craft incenses focusing on abundant ingredients that are found primarily in our local ecosystem.  This will include a discussion of how to formulate an incense blend in terms of both notes and ratios\, typical herbs and resins you can use\,  how to break down herbs into bowder\, and how to create both combustible (cones and sticks) and non-combustible (powders or granules) to burn on a charcoal block.\nHerbal Smoke Stick crafting: Smoke sticks were traditionally burned either for spiritual/religious purposes or in the event of airborne sickness.  We will demonstrate the basic approach to making your own smoke sticks from local and abundant plants\, including many you can forage or grow in your garden.\nHerbal Smoking Blends:  When we think of “smoking” in this culture\, it is often seen as a terrible thing due to the additives and chemicals and the addictive properties of tobacco.  But herbal smokes–including herbs such as mullein\, mugwort\, damiana\, and more–have a rich history and can be used to support lung health\, end nicotine and tobacco addiction\, and calm the nerves.  We offer an introduction to how to create smoking blends for medicinal benefit.\n\nAfter this workshop\, participants will have time to circulate through each of the make and take stations\, crafting their own herbal incense\, smoke sticks\, and smoking blend. \nTicket options:  \nTicket options are as follows:  Friday and Saturday (Aromatics weekend)\, Or for the full weekend Friday-Sunday (please note Sunday is a 4 hour herbal immersion for advanced students with at least 25 credits of instruction from the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism with a basic understanding to the basic methods of Traditional Western Herbalism/energetics/Herbal actions). SUMMARY:Late Summer Wildcrafting\, Foraging\, and Medicine Making Intensive at Mother Earth Farm
DESCRIPTION:CLASS IS FULL! \nJoin the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism for our third medicine foraging and medicine-making intensive\, focusing on herbs and medicines of late summer. In this intensive\, we will spend time with some unique herbs found at Mother Earth farm\, including wetland herbs like calamus as well as late season blooms like goldenrod. \nThe first part of our intensive will include exploring and harvesting medicines in a variety of ecosystems: field\, edge spaces\, and forests.  On our foraging walk\, we will focus on plant\, tree\, and mushroom identification\, foraging safety and harvest ethics\, and consider the role of stewardship in foraging practice.  In the second part of our intensive\, we will process and make medicine from our harvests\, which–depending on what we find– will include calamus tinctures among other preparations. This will be a hands-on experience. \nPreparation: Good footwear is essential for this class; please wear a closed-toe hiking shoe with good tread\, long pants\, and layers for a variety of weather conditions. Foraging often includes rough terrain and off-trail walking\, and Mother Earth Farm has a hilly landscape where we will be off-trail. Are you interested in learning how to identify\, harvest\, and prepare food and medicine from our local ecosystem?  If so\, join Daniel and Dana for a full day immersed in the living landscape of Central Pennsylvania at the beautiful 277-acre Stackhouse Park in the Laurel Highlands\, where you will learn to recognize\, harvest\, and prepare wild foods and medicines of the summer season. \nThe morning will be spent in the woods\, where we will search for edible and medicinal mushrooms and wild plants while developing essential skills in identification\, safe and ethical harvesting\, reading the landscape\, foraging ethics\, nature stewardship\, and observation. Our focus is on helping you build confidence in identification and foraging skills. \nIn the afternoon\, we will identify\, prepare\, and wildcraft with the plants and mushrooms we’ve\, learning practical methods for transforming wild harvests into usable forms. He’s been teaching an ‘introduction to safe mushroom hunting’ for multiple years in parks and at mushroom festivals and events in Pennsylvania. A member of the North American Mycological Association\, the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club\, as well as several others. Daniel excels in cooking mushroom meals and loves teaching all of this to others in an education and experience based manner. In a good year he may eat as many as 20 species. He also operates a business called ‘Mushroom Nerds’ selling foraging gear at events up and down the East Coast. As an Amateur Mycologist Daniel collects specimens for DNA sequencing and aids in building the science of fungi. SUMMARY:Late Spring Foraging\, Wildcrafting\, and Wild Medicine Making Intensive at Blue Spruce Park (Indiana\, PA)
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, summer\, and fall\, Dana from the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism is offering herbal foraging and medicine-making intensives at a variety of regional locations. Join us for our first herbal intensive\, which will focus on the plants and mushrooms in season in late Spring. \nPart of growing your herbalism practice is developing a relationship with your local ecosystem and the medicine that grows there. This includes learning about plant identification\, where herbs grow in our ecosystem\, and safe foraging practices. But it also involves learning about reciprocation practices: how to be a good steward of the land where you live\, how to monitor plant and mushroom populations and increase medicinal plants\, and how to give back more than you take.  In the first part of this class\, attendees will be introduced to a variety of ecosystems at Blue Spruce Park in Indiana\, PA\, including edge spaces\, lawn\, wetland\, woodland wetland\, and forest.  We will place an emphasis on plant and mushroom identification\, ethical foraging\, stewardship\, and reciprocal herbalism practices. We will cover identification of plants\, trees\, and fungi that are medicinal (and occasionally\, edible!) Our emphasis in this class is on harvesting invasive plants to support the health of the park (including Japanese Knotweed\, Japanese Barberry). We will learning of their medicinal virtues\, and make medicine from these amazing–if not opportunistic–species. \nIn the second part of this class\, we will learn to process and make medicine from the plants that we harvested\, which includes garbling\, cleaning\, and preparing. \nPreparation: Good footwear is essential for this class; please wear a closed-toe hiking shoe with good tread\, long pants\, and layers for a variety of weather conditions. Foraging often includes rough terrain and off-trail walking\, and we will be off-trail and on some sloped\, damp\, and rocky areas. Bring bug spray and tick repellent.  Participants will find it helpful to bring a notebook to document and take notes.  An open-weave basket\, gloves\, a knife\, and a pair of pruners are also recommended. \nGloves are strongly recommended since we will be harvesting and working with Japanese Barberry\, which has thorns. \nLocation: Blue Spruce Park in Indiana\, PA at Pavilion #4.  9am – 1pm. \nCost: Sliding scale $40-$80.  Sliding scale means that you pay what you can afford to pay\, so please pay what you can afford. \nHerbalism Certificate Credits: 3 stewardship and identification; 1 medicine making

SUMMARY:Medicinal Mushrooms of Eastern USA: Medicinal Virtues\, Double Extraction and Topicals\, and Foraging (VIRTUAL)
DESCRIPTION:In this two-part virtual class\, Dana Driscoll from the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism will provide a thorough introduction to mushroom medicine: herbal virtues\, preparation\, and uses\, as well as how to forage for medicinal mushrooms. The class will focus on mushrooms that are commonly found in the Northeastern United States\, although many of these mushrooms are also found globally. The course will cover eight different common medicinal mushrooms and two different herbal preparations: the double-extracted mushroom tincture and mushroom salves.  We will also discuss mushroom taxonomy and identification features\, and wild mushroom foraging safety. \nThe course will be delivered as a two-part virtual synchronous Zoom-based course\, with opportunities to ask questions and interact with the instructor and students between each session.  Students will have enough time between the two sessions to prepare their double-extract tincture and share results in our second session.
