SUMMARY:Free Community Class: Frontier Herbalism: Traditional Herbalism Practices in Western Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:Join Dana Driscoll from the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism to learn about how people in previous centuries used plants for medicinal purposes in our ecosystem.  We will cover a number of plants growing in our ecosystem that have been used as traditional medicine\, including sassafras\, black birch\, willow\, plantain\, comfre\,y and hawthorn.  We will also have a chance to meet these plants and trees and learn about their identification\, core medicinal uses\, and make medicine from some of them.  Participants will have a chance to make several traditional plant preparations\, including poultices\, tinctures\, and salves.  An optional donation for $5 for supplies. \nThis event is being offered free to the community and in conjunction with the Indiana County 1776 speaker series and the Indiana County Friends of the Parks. \nLocation: Yellow Creek State Park (Indiana County)\, Woodland Pavilion \nTime: 5-7pm \nThis class offers 1 credit of medicine making as part of the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism’s Certificate Program.  \nNo pre-registration is required–just show up if you want to attend!

SUMMARY:Free Community Event - Spring Mushroom walk with Tree ID (Indiana County)
DESCRIPTION:Join Dana from the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism along with Diana (Oak Haven Farms)\, and Richard Jacob (Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club Identifier) for an interactive 3-hour morel hunting and tree ID class.  This free community event is sponsored by the Indiana County Friends of the Parks.  Our interactive walk will focus on finding and identifying mushrooms that grow in early spring.  We will also focus on tree identification\, which is key for mushroom hunting.  Participants should wear sturdy footwear. \nLocation: Pine Ridge Park\, Pavilion #1 – 998 Pine Ridge Road\, Blairsville\, PA. \nDate: Saturday\, April 11th\, 10am – 1pm.  No preregistration is required. \nAttending this walk earns 1 hour of Stewardship and Identification through our 50 or 100 hour certificate program.

DESCRIPTION:April 17th\, 2025 –An Appalachian Tradition: Crafting Spring Tonics\, Herbal Sodas\, and Old Fashioned Root Beers You must register for this class from the Folk School Website here! Join Dana Driscoll from the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism to explore the rich Appalachian tradition of crafting root beers and other herbal sodas using local ingredients like spruce tips\, sarsaparilla roots\, sassafras roots\, black birch bark\, and more. We will explore the medicinal virtues of a range of roots and barks that are important to our regional heritage and will also discuss foraging tips for where to find these and how to harvest. Two different methods for We will craft two different herbal sodas together\, and all attendees will have an opportunity to take some soda syrup home with them and sample both sodas we create.
