SUMMARY:Late Summer Wildcrafting\, Foraging\, and Medicine Making Intensive at Mother Earth Farm
DESCRIPTION:CLASS IS FULL! \nJoin the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism for our third medicine foraging and medicine-making intensive\, focusing on herbs and medicines of late summer. In this intensive\, we will spend time with some unique herbs found at Mother Earth farm\, including wetland herbs like calamus as well as late season blooms like goldenrod. \nThe first part of our intensive will include exploring and harvesting medicines in a variety of ecosystems: field\, edge spaces\, and forests.  On our foraging walk\, we will focus on plant\, tree\, and mushroom identification\, foraging safety and harvest ethics\, and consider the role of stewardship in foraging practice.  In the second part of our intensive\, we will process and make medicine from our harvests\, which–depending on what we find– will include calamus tinctures among other preparations. This will be a hands-on experience. \nPreparation: Good footwear is essential for this class; please wear a closed-toe hiking shoe with good tread\, long pants\, and layers for a variety of weather conditions. Foraging often includes rough terrain and off-trail walking\, and Mother Earth Farm has a hilly landscape where we will be off-trail. Bring bug spray and tick repellent.  Participants will find it helpful to bring a notebook to document and take notes.  An open-weave basket\, gloves\, a small shovel\, a knife\, and a pair of pruners are also recommended. \nCost: Sliding scale $35-$65.  Sliding scale means that you pay what you can afford to pay\, so please pay what you can afford. \nLocation: Mother Earth Farm\, 4420 Warren Rd\, Indiana\, PA 15701\n \nCredits: This program also qualifies for 2 hours of stewardship and identification credits and 1 hour of medicine making with the Pennsylvania School of Herbalism (applicable toward the 50-hour and 100-hour certificate programs). \nAbout Mother Earth Farm: We are a women-owned\, family-operated farm located in Indiana\, PA; growing sustainably to ensure we leave the Earth better off than we found it. SUMMARY:Acute Herbalism: Herbs for UTIs\, Migraines\, and Nausea (Indiana\, PA)
DESCRIPTION:This class is FULL! If you are interested in being added to a waitlist please email us at info@paherbschool.com \nAcute Herbalism refers to using herbal medicine to treat sudden or severe health concerns\, including nausea\, flu\, infection\, injury\, or pain.  In this class\, we will discuss the different categories of acute herbalism (wound care\, flu and fever support\, managing nausea\, addressing migraines\, addressing injury\, and managing pain) and what preparations to have on hand and available for the common concerns people experience. This class deepens and extends our discussion of the herbal home apothecary (the October class)\, although you do not need to take that class to learn from this one.  We will then apply herbal energetics to formulate medicine for several common acute concerns: headaches/migraines\, nausea/vomiting\, and urinary tract infections. Please see This page to sign up! \nA home apothecary is a collection of herbs and herbal preparations: tinctures\, salves\, dried herbs\, vinegars\, for the purposes of having easy access to herbal remedies you need for yourself and your family. Creating your home apothecary is an important step in your herbal journey—an apothecary can help you grow in your herbalism practice and integrate herbalism more fully into your everyday life.  In this class\, we will engage in an interactive workshop in how to setup and use a home apothecary. This includes: what herbs to include\, materia medica information\, record keeping\, location\, storage options\, labeling and organizing systems\, maintaining potency and freshness\, and additional supplies needed.  We will also cover how to use your apothecary and how to continue to build your herbal wisdom through your apothecary. Dana will share several different models that people use.  Participants will leave class with a plan to create or expand their own herbal apothecaries. \nCost: $25-45 sliding scale. DESCRIPTION:Invasive Plant Pull and Medicine Making with Japanese Barberry – Two events!\n\n\nHosted by Friends of Whites Woods (https://www.friendsofwhiteswoods.org/)\, The Pennsylvania School of Herbalism (www.paherbschool.com)\, and the Pick a Dilly Herb Faire (https://dillweedinc.com/event/pick-a-dilly-herb-faire-3) \n\nJoin us for a day focusing on a potent medicinal invasive species in our ecosystem: Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii). We have a two-part event\, and you are welcome to attend one or both sessions.  This is a free event and open to the public.\n\nMORNING: Japanese Barberry: Identification and Pull with Friends of White’s Woods – 10am – 12pm at White’s Woods (12th street entrance: ).Join us at White’s Woods to learn about Japanese Barberry’s impact on the ecosystem and on tick populations\, and take part in a Barberry removal project to help our local ecosystem.  As we do this\, herbalist Dana Driscoll will share about how to identify barberry and demonstrate the difference between our native American Barberry (Berberis canadensis) and Japanese Barberry.  We will spend time pulling and digging barberry out of the forest.\n\nAFTERNOON: Japanese Barberry Medicine Making: 1:30 – 2:30 pm at the Pick-a-Dilly Herb Faire (More details and location). Japanese Barberry is an incredibly useful medicinal plant species that is rich in berberine\, which is used both to fight bacterial and viral infections and to increase insulin sensitivity.  Berberine has been increasingly demonstrated by scientific studies to explore a range of medicinal uses\, and Japanese Barberry is an important replacement for over-harvested and at-risk berberine-containing species such as Oregon grape root (Berberis nervosa) or Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis).  We will learn how to process and make medicine from Japanese Barberry roots\, and everyone will be able to take some medicine home with them.
